Initially, this year 2020 was, for photographer Mike Witjes, marked and dominated by the COVID -19 pandemic in such a way that he seemed to lose touch with himself. This had everything to do with the fact that during the period of the so-called ‘intelligent lock-down’ in March and April public life came to a halt in the Netherlands. His activities as an actor, as a photographer and his work as a theatre teacher also came to a screaming halt. He therefore started a quest for a way to handle this situation.
As a result of his search, the difficult and complex situation eventually turned into a source of inspiration for capturing and visualizing the fear, isolation and loneliness which characterize this COVID-situation. By means of staged and theatrical photography he visualized my quest for protection and a sense of security in his own house, which was, of course, also a way of hiding himself for the reality of the day. The series Twenty Twenty came into being with a nod to the absurdity of the whole situation.
